[Socal] Socal] I think McCain will win GAIL

Thanks! I think that many people have a sense that this administration is scary but don't quite know why... They think it may be simply around the war, gay rights, and lousy Supreme Court choices. It is far deeper than that. If you read the links the language is so thinly veiled... around the concept of world domination through a strong and present military and "superior morals". It's scary... the signers of some of the letters from this think tank include:

Elliott Abrams Richard L. Armitage William J. Bennett
Jeffrey Bergner John Bolton Paula Dobriansky
Francis Fukuyama Robert Kagan Zalmay Khalilzad
William Kristol Richard Perle Peter W. Rodman
Donald Rumsfeld William Schneider, Jr. Vin Weber
Paul Wolfowitz R. James Woolsey Robert B. Zoellick

This list is from a letter signed to President Clinton in 1998. Cheney is also a signer of some of the documents. Any of those names look familiar to you? These folks have the hold on the Republican platform and anyone running off that platform will be indebted to it and may even keep some of these folks surrounding them.... It is NOT ok that a select group of men (and a few women) have this power... There are plenty of Republicans out there who are warning against what is going on (so this is NOT a trash against Republicans) including but certainly not limited to: Sandra Day O'Connor, John Dean, and Alan Greenspan. I would even go so far to say that Schwarzanneger John McCain, I thought, was of this tribe, but the more I am hearing and reading the more worried I am getting...

I personally think it is done for Hilary, based on the New York Times articles I have been reading. Even THEY are trashing her. If you are going to vote the current platfiorm out, get ready to vote Obama IN. No matter how you look at it... it is this country stepping outside the white male box of politics... and both candidates are there opening the door for all of us. I voted for Hilary in the primary and I am getting ready to vote for Obama in the election... In the end, it isn't who is IN office but who they surround themselves with... George Bush is a figure head for a think tank in DC that has the likes of Cheney, Rumsfeld, Libby, etc who sit around the table. George Bush has just been lovable enough (with that Teddy Bear look) to keep around long enough for them to have carried out their mission, which has been to lock the US into combat for 100 years... Their mission was to strengthen the US military (spending) and spread "US values"...
McCain will be indebted to this platform if he is elected... and will carry on that mission...

Well, people's logic can be a bit screwy sometimes. It makes no sense to not vote for someone, based on their middle name. Obama is as American as any of us, including your employee. Damn, this is 2008! This logic is like stuff that was done in the past, when people said they would never vote for a woman, an African American, or any other non-Caucasian person. If we haven't people progressed any further, then we're in big trouble. Honestly, I'm dumbfounded at people's stupidity sometimes. I know that's judgmental, but this kind of thinking makes no sense.

Voting for McCain is getting more of what we've had since Bush was elected, so shame on any democrat who votes for McCain, simply because they don't like Obama's middle name. Voting for one of the democrats at least ensures that there's the possibility for some change in this country. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

One of my employees just said it to me this morning "I won't vote for someone with the name Barack HUSSSEIN Obama" saying he will go for McCain if Hillary isn't chosen and this guy is a moderate democrat from California.

My contacts in the south are predicting they all go red again
if Obama gets the nod. I think if we as democrats can put Hillary up she could take some of the southern states.. and we have to take some of them to win the election.

True, bewonkie2u, he doesn't have as much experience in global politics as some people do. However, he's also done a lot to become familiar with global issues, has an expansive approach in terms of how he views things and has lived overseas, i.e., he's a curious person and intellectually capable of grasping what's important. Therefore, whether Clinton or Obama is the nominee, they'll already be far ahead of Bush when they take office; I don't believe, at this time, that McCain will win.

Interestingly, in today's L.A. Times, there was a review of a book by Samantha Power, who spent 2005 and 2006 advising Obama on foreign policy issues. This is a very smart woman who really knows what she's talking about, so you might want to check her out. I've known about her for a while, because of her work on the genocide in Rwanda (I did a lot of research on it for a paper in August 1999). I'm copying the first two paragraphs of the review below:

"Samantha Power wears a lot of hats these days -- journalist, human rights activist, professor of "global leadership" at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, author and policy advisor. The latter role is of particular interest, since she spent 2005 and 2006 working in Sen. Barack Obama's office and still advises the Democratic presidential candidate on foreign policy issues. If there's an Obama administration, she's widely believed to be in line for a significant job.

"Murky as the junior senator from Illinois can sometimes seem on the domestic details, public understanding of his foreign policy goals is just this side of a tabula rasa. Thus, Power's new book, "Chasing the Flame: Sergio Vieira de Mello and the Fight to Save the World," is of uncommon interest on several counts. The author is best known for her earlier work, the Pulitzer Prize-winning " 'A Problem From Hell': America and the Age of Genocide," a searing critique of U.S. policy toward mass murder with a particular focus on the reprehensible failures in Bosnia and Rwanda."

Well sure, I like a strong, experienced woman to be in charge too, since I like being the bottom in bed (but only in bed), but Clinton doesn't do it for me. What can I say? Thanks, I appreciate your views too and it seems we agree to disagree. Yes, the country will still be run by the same folks who are in charge now, but the president still has an awful lot of power.

Gail

You are right..there is a lot at stake. It's not about age, it's about experience with global politics. I appreciate beautifully executed rhetoric done by a charismatic figure just as much as the next butch, but I'm more comfortable with a strong experienced woman in charge...does that make me a bottom? naaawww
There is also a body of thought that says that no matter who wins the presidency our country is still run by the same 3% of the wealthy capitalistic machine.
I appreciate your views, Gail, even if I don't share them.

JFK was 43 years old when he ran for president. So according to your logic, Bewonkie2u, JFK was a kid too? Would you have preferred that Nixon had won the election, because he was older than JFK? It doesn't make sense to determine how someone might do, based on how old they are. Obama was in the Illinois legislature for a number of years and has been a senator for three years, and Clinton has been in the Senate for seven years, so their experience working in government is about the same. Both Democratic candidates are smart and intellectually capable of leading the country, and either one would be a vast improvement over Bush. Kucinich was the only candidate who was in favor of gay and lesbian marriage, by the way, which would give us far more rights than civil unions.

A McCain administration would be very similar to the current Bush administration. Is this what people think is best for the country? Yes, he served his country during the Vietnam War, and we can admire him for that. However, McCain has said that he thinks we could be in Iraq for another 100 years. Is that really what people want? Another anti-GLBT government? To have our civil rights eroded even further? To see more of our young people die? To continue to pay for a war we never should have gotten into, indefinitely? So that more of our resources are spent on the war, while more than 40 million people don't have health insurance and money for the things that made this county great, like education, our physical infrastructure (e.g., highways and bridges, which are in severe disrepair), the uncertainty of social security, etc., continue to be cut from the budget? So that young people, who are already cynical about their futures and what's in store
for them, become more cynical and pessimistic, because the future looks bleak? Are people seriously contemplating voting for McCain, just because they don't think Obama is old enough or has enough experience? Do people really want another justice like Roberts appointed to the Supreme Court? We need to look at the big picture here. We can learn things from all sorts of people, including people younger than ourselves, since they can expand our horizons in ways we never could have imagined, so perhaps it's time to be more open.

I'm 53 and I would never vote for McCain, or any other Republican for president, and do not understand how anyone else could, especially this year, when so much is at stake.

Gail

I would be willing to bet that the American people will not tolerate 4 more years of of a Bush-like administration -- which you all know we would get. Republican is a republican is a republican. We cannot afford ONE more year of Bush-ites in the oval office -- no matter how much he claims to be different. Folks, it was not just the White House that the GOPers occupied; the congress for 7 years, and the judiciary for what will be the better part of all of our lives the way Cheney set it up.
Young people know that the GOP screwed their future. If they get behind another one then the young truly hold suicidal tendencies.

I keep hearing this sentiment in all my normally yellow dog democrat groups.
Not to mention independent voters who are already beginning to line up behind McCain because he is seen as a maverick.
At a pic-nic on Sunday pro-Clinton people were saying they could not uniformally support Obama and would rather go with the more experienced McCain.

Young people no doubt are supporting Obama but they have historically low voter turn-out. Many over 40 Americans even democrats will turn to McCain I predict, if Obama gets the nod. I just wish we had held the election 6 mos. ago when Clinton was leading ALL Candidates on both sides by double digits. Becky:)

I'm a 4th generation democrat with socialist leanings. If Hillary does not get the nod, since I do not want an inexperienced kid (as good of a speaker as he is) leading our nation, I will default to McCain. I've never voted conservative in my life but will do so in this instance. Ideally, Hillary will be Pres. and Obama VP. In 4 or 8 years, Obama will have the experience and wisdom to be our President. Then I will even campaign for him. Just not now.

Hi...

You know what ... my prediction is that McCain will win.... Sadly.
The reason why I think so, is because I think the majority of people in our country overall are racist and sexist... (among other stuff). And sadly, those people don't care who will be the most qualified to be president, they will base it solely on race and/or sex. I wish I could believe this won't happen and feel more positive about it, but I'm thinking that I'm just joking myself to believe that this nation would actually vote a black man or a woman for president. Again... I want Clinton to win because she is 100% for marriage equality (civil union), and I believe she will do something about health care. But I will vote for Obama 2nd choice, I will not vote Republican (even it were a woman or black male Republican). You know... I liked Edwards passion about the working middle class and how Corps screw us everyday. Anyway...
